The following foods can be harmful to dogs:
CHOCOLATE – Chocolate contains the naturally occurring stimulant, theobromine, which is found in the cocoa bean. Theobromine affects the central nervous system and heart muscle. If a dog eats a significant amount of chocolate, his heart rate will increase along with muscle contractions which could then lead to fits and convulsions.
GRAPES – Grapes (and raisins) can be poisonous to some breeds and indigestible to all dogs. No-one is entirley sure of the reason but what we do know is that the end result is usually kidney failure. Dogs are then unable to produce urine therefore cannot get rid of toxins in their systems.
MACADAMIA NUTS - These are toxic to dogs. The symptoms of macadamia nut toxocis are vomiting, an inability to stand and wobbly legs, depression, muscle tremors, hyperthermia and an elevated heart rate. The toxic dose to dogs ranges from 2.4-62.4 grams per kilogram of body weight. This means that even a tiny amount can be toxic to small dogs.
ONIONS – Onions contain allyl propyl disulfide which can be fatal to dogs as it damages their red blood cells. They can deveop haemolytic anaemia which is when the red blood cells burst when circulating the body. This can be the case whether the onions have been cooked or not. The amount that would need to be eaten can sometimes be high but it is best to make sure your dog does not eat onions at all.
ALCOHOL – Giving your dog alcohol (yes, some people try it) can supress their central nervous system, respiratory system and cardiac system and can be fatal.
